Lilith and Medusa: Love notes

Lilith

I saw you arrive. You walked through into Hades’ home looking dazed but relieved. I wondered if your life had been so taxing that coming to this place felt like a heaven. Its a lot more fun down here than up there with the gods, what with their fake smiles, white robes and ambiguous morals. Here we live truly. What you see is what you get.

Hades showed you around quickly and then left you to your own devices while he went to go and fetch somebody else. You sat in a corner alone for many days, not speaking unless spoken to. You seemed afraid of the men at first but then you found your footing. I saw you turn someone to stone after they harassed you. That’s when you really caught my eye. Hades’ had to get the witches to sort that out. They’re not stone anymore, how unfortunate; they looked like they were annoying. But they did not bother you after that though. Small wins.

I watched you from a distance. You hair twisted around you sometimes, or slithered lazily down your back. I’ve never seen a style like that before. Its very beautiful. The green compliments your yellow eyes. Your cheek bones are very sharp, and your face is gaunt, unsightly to some, but radiant to me.

Medusa

I felt your eyes on me one night. They bore into me, far harder than my own eyes bore into the souls of the men I killed. I could see you watching, even though you were far away. The horns on your head are elaborate. Do they get in the way sometimes? Your dress does very little to hide your chest, but you seem comfortable that way. This seems like the sort of place where such a thing is acceptable. The incubi here can be pesky, but they do not violate anyone. How strange. It would seem that such actions are the acts of Gods and earthly men. And yet they say we are the monsters.

You move a bit like a snake when you walk. I like that. Its very fluid and sensual. The beings here make way for you as you take your children around. They seem to respect you here. I liked that when I first saw you. You command the place. I saw you talk to that being who looks like he is of the heavens, and yet he has somehow found himself here. I saw you look at me when he was not looking at you. It made me blush. Can you see blood rush to my grey face? I have never looked in the mirror. Not until you gave me one anyway.

Lilith

I left my children with their father and came to you. We could not play this staring game any longer. You liked to sit in your shadow, and you tried to hide inside it when I approached you. Nobody hides from me. You kept your eyes closed though. They do not work here unless you will them too, but you were courteous enough to not take chances with me.

Your voice was like a soft hiss; disturbing to many but soothing to me. You opened your eyes but looked to the ground as you introduced me to yourself. You’re a shy one. I don’t know why they did this to you when you were on earth. But it makes you all the more wonderous to look at. If they think they punished you they are wrong. This is a gift.

Medusa

I looked up into your eyes for the first time on the third day you spoke to me. I was scared. Would you turn into stone and never speak to me again after the witches turned you back. Its a mercy that they can do that here in the underworld. On earth, when I did that, a man was dead. It saved me though. I hated them all.

You were the first person to believe me when I said what that sea god did to me. Why my face is like this. That bitch decided to target me instead of him. How could she? I did not ask the sea god to assault me. But it seems like you understand. Your body too was taken control of, in a different way. Your first husband did not like your power, and that’s why you fathered your children with that angel-looking being who never seems to stay in this place.

Your children are very cute. Albeit a bit naughty. But you told me you are the demon mother. It seems only fitting. They like me. And they like my hair. That’s what matters.

Lilith

Those bastard angels raided us again. Time and time again they raid us here while we try to mind our own business. Is it not enough to have damned us here? No. It seems war and thorough subjugation is their only satisfaction. And yet we are the evil ones?

You came to save me. You willed your eyes to turn them to stone. Hades did not bother to ask the witches to turn them back. They make beautiful ornaments.

Medusa

It tingles the top of my head when you play with my hair. The tresses don’t bite you for some reason. They used to poison people when I was on earth. You told me that you children’s father is the Angel of Death. You told me his role in the chaos on earth. That he is the one who tricked your first husband’s second wife into taking the forbidden fruit. You said you liked the bad boys in those days, but today, it seems you like me, a bad woman. Is it selfish of me to be happy that your children’s father is too busy to balance reaping souls to be with you, so now I can have you all to myself?

My hair is allowing you to twist it. Now that’s a surprise indeed! But you said you were a snake yourself after you left the earth. We are bonding over the same things it seems.

Your children called me mom the other day. Did you hear them? Its been a few years, and I think I have learnt all the names of all hundred of them. Its been a hard task, but nothing is too difficult for me when it comes to pleasing you.

Lilith

When you kiss me, it tastes as bitter as your heart. That’s just the way I like it. You have a snake’s tongue in your mouth, just like I do. They wrap around each other perfectly. Its a different experience when your mouth caresses my womanhood, or my chest. You have tricks I would never think I would receive in the way that I give them. Your hair is cold, but when you hold me in the night, you feel very warm. Although I do not need to sleep, in your arms I rest as easily as the moon glides across the dark sky.

Medusa

Our children are old enough now, and they can lead their own lives. I made you a ring. Hades blessed it for me and then fashioned me my own. He had a vile of the blood of seven virgin succubi. He dipped the rings in it. He says as long as we vow to love each other, our bond will be rich.

Now that we’re alone and free of our responsibilities, we can decorate each other’s hair in poison ivy and lie with each other in a drunken stupor. We can sing songs of horror and treachery, and write poems of death and destruction. We can appear in the mirrors of unsuspecting humans, haunt their dreams, aid their spells. We can inspire these earthly women to leave their earthly husbands and be as happy and free as us two are. We can inspire a nation of women to embrace their darkness and their sexual power. Chaos is nothing but the power of men being placed in someone else’s hands.

When we’re tired, we can lay here quietly, watching the moon wax and wane the years away. Nobody cared about either of us, but now we don’t have to care about anyone but each other.
